ABM are going back to the drawing board with their 7020 & 7021 models of Roller Nut. They’ve recently stopped production of the two guitar nuts to redesign and later release a new model in the autumn. There are no details yet as to what the changes will made but there is one rather large problem that definitely needs addressing.

I’d say that, for the most part, ABM have got the design of the roller nut right; they’re a solid brass construction with precision rollers and are in keeping with the style of a traditional guitar nut. However, installing one requires a permanent modification to your guitar – 2.5mm off of the end of the fretboard. The improved tuning stability when using a tremolo/vibrato tailpiece will entice a good number of guitarists to fit one, regardless of the work needed; However, for many, any thought of hacking away at the fretboard is a huge no-no.

As there are so few options available (the Fender LSR being one of them), I do think a rethought model will be successful, providing they address the glaring installation issue. A few models that don’t cater to Fender and Gibson would be a welcomed addition to the product line also. It will certainly be interesting to see what spin ABM make on their existing design.
