Drop D Tuning - The Easy Way

What is Drop D?

For those who are unfamiliar with this tuning, Drop D tuning is just another alternative to Standard Tuning. For example; E Standard on a guitar would become D, A, D, G, A, E and a Bass in E Standard would become D, A, D, G.

How do I tune to Drop D?

It is easy to achieve and simply involves using your guitar’s machine head to the tune the bottom E string down a whole-tone (or two steps) to D.

Is there a even quicker and easier way?

Although dropping down to D easy to achieve, it may not always be practical. Pulling out your headstock tuner or looking down at a tuning pedal is never a good look, and certainly isn’t particularly professional in the middle of a song. If you find you need to go between E and D often and quickly, then a Drop D Tuning Key may be exactly what you need.

A Drop D Tuning Key or “Detuner” simply replaces your existing bottom E machine head on your guitar or bass. With just the flip of a lever, you can drop down from E Standard to D.

Hipshot produce a full range of guitar and bass Xtenders that do just that! You can read more about the Hipshot Detuners HERE
